Case & Point, 1-Click Ordering

Earlier I wrote a post about why and how I buy. Sitting down to my computer this evening my wireless mouse kindly notified me that my batteries were low. I was just at the store not but an hour ago and now the thought of making a special trip, just to purchase batteries, seems like a giant pain in the rear and waste of time. Needless to say Amazon.com to the rescue again, only further illustrating my point about convenience ranking high on my list of why I buy on-line. In less then a minute I ordered Duracell Coppertop AA Batteries, 20-Count from Amazon.com for a whopping $13.43 with free 2 day shipping.

Why & How I Buy

Why & How I Buy

The retail industry goes great lengths to measure, monitor and research what drives consumers to purchase. Companies exist for that very reason, working to gain a clear understanding of the psychology that ultimately drives a purchasing decision. Enormous amounts of data have been collected in an effort to better understand purchase decision making. There may be no magic formula, but the industry has come a long way. One of the first books I read specific to the topic called Why We Buy by Paco Underhill does a great job helping illustrate how everything within the physical retail space is done on purpose to influence these behaviors. The lighting, décor, colors, every single element is done for a reason, creating an environment conducive to making a purchase.
